The 13:35 to Omaha barrelled toward them, pumping smoke and steam into the air as it thundered down the rails in the wrong direction, both engines screaming toward each other at incredible speed, neither one able to slow down in time, two unstoppable forces spilling soot into the desert as they lunged forward.

There was an incredible screech of metal as the engines smashed into each other, an explosion of hot orange flame balling into a fist and thrusting violently up into the soot-cloud. Steel sheared the sand as both trains crashed off the rails, screaming past each other in a horrendous grinding mess of black and red and white. One ripped the other in half and enormous clouds of glass sprayed the dirt, the rails buckling as candied daylight danced over the carnage. Time seemed to stretch thing around the collision like the two engines had created some impossible vortex: the awful, screeching seconds that followed stretched into minutes, and those into eternities, as each train punched a hole in the other and the two became a twisted, single mass of death and fire.

Eventually, everything was still. The rails smouldered as the husks of both trains lay smashed into sheets of metal and wood in the dirt, still smoking.

Slowly something moved through the wreckage, silent and wraith-like as it bent beneath seats and danced softly down the aisles. It was kind as it touched them, drinking only what it could bear to take, respectfully sidestepping the blood that spilled into the carpet as it swelled and bent like water.

Thick, black fog rose inside the carriages and pressed against the windows, the entire train filling with shadow. And then, just as quickly as it had swelled, the fog disappeared.
